Travellers looking across emerald tropical islands and a calm mineral-blue sea

The shape of the journey

  • Two dawn river safaris with trained nature guides
  • Small-scale rainforest lodge stay
  • Three unhurried nights beside the sea

Wild places, observed with care

This is a journey built around patience. River light, distant calls, and small signs in the forest matter as much as headline sightings. Guides follow local conservation rules and never stage encounters.

Accommodation and meals

The rainforest lodge is simple, comfortable, and close to the habitat. The island stay gives the second half of the journey room to breathe. Exact properties are named in your quotation.

Important information

Weather and river conditions can change timings. Wildlife is never guaranteed. Guests should be comfortable boarding small boats and walking on uneven, occasionally wet ground.

Day by day

Day 01 Sandakan arrival

Meet your local host, settle in, and review the week with a practical conservation briefing.

Day 02 Into the river country

Travel overland to the Kinabatangan, check into the lodge, and take a first late-afternoon river outing.

Day 03 Dawn on the Kinabatangan

Begin on the water before breakfast, rest through midday, then return to the forest edge as light softens.

Day 04 A second patient morning

Another early nature outing allows different habitats and conditions to shape the experience before returning to Sandakan.

Day 05 River to reef

Transfer by road and boat to a small island stay, with the afternoon left open for swimming and rest.

Day 06 Your island pace

Choose snorkelling with a local guide, a beach walk, or an entirely unstructured day by the water.

Day 07 Return with time

A planned boat and road transfer connects with your onward journey without compressing the morning.
